31 Days of Spooky: Clue

ClueSo I feel like its time to go into a bit of the comedy horror/thriller realm to mix it up. And I think I’ve explained a few times just how much I love Clue. Despite being based off a board game, this film is clever, funny, and just downright iconic. It may not perfectly fit Halloween, but it is one I could watch any time of the year and I think it could fit here. So let me get into it before I start gushing.

Clue is the story of 6 strangers invited to a mansion on a stormy night. It turns out they are all being blackmailed by the mysterious Mr. Body who owns the mansion. If that wasn’t bad enough, Mr. Body winds up dead in a brief blackout, and its unclear who the killer is. What follows is a murder mystery adventure with the all 6 potentially being the killer. And to top it all off, there are 3 different endings to really make it like the game, and just be more fun.

I think above all else the cast is where Clue excels. Starring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, Michael McKean, and Eileen Brennan its pretty easy to see how they would. I can’t really think of times he wasn’t amazing, but Tim Curry is at his very best here as the butler Wadsworth and will have you charmed throughout. Michael McKean and Madeline Kahn also have some of the most memorable scenes and deliveries of lines in any movie I know. With a film co-written by director Jonathan Lynn and the stellar John Landis its truly understandable why the jokes are so good. Lynn deserves a lot of credit for really making the house and film feel just like the board game Clue come to life. Quite honestly, I could gush for several paragraphs more, but I won’t bore you or spoil it. You really need to go see Clue if you haven’t. If you don’t then you’ll likely see me so angry I have flames on the side of my face, breathing-breathl- heaving breaths….
